When painting Scapes...they are an escape...a free association of paint, passion and innocence...gawking at the wonders of nature then writing a dissertation in paint on the wonders of sub atomic particles that make up an atom, that bond and form a cell that bond and form a form, that take on a color or become air we breathe, scents we smell, tactile facets we experience and visions too beautiful to be random...but these paintings do not question anything...only scratch at the surface of bliss...

For the viewer...These paintings are true landscape based and that is to allow the viewer to engage from a notion of familiarity. However, their true meaning exists within a larger form of abstraction. To begin, the horizon lines are particularly skewed to force a perception of flatness. From there the painting should be viewed as distinct color fields that explore the relationship of color and form as it affects emotion; first with the larger, obvious color fields and then to explore the minute but distinct relationships involved in each stroke or placement of color as they create intensity or calm.

Its funny to me to have all these landscapes on my site since I am not a landscape painter...its just that lately I have had to clear my mind and nature really does it for this artist! It is a beautiful thing to try to capture nature at is purest. Paint is pure too...it glides and flows onto the canvas leaving life impressions with every stroke...Stay tuned for 2010 works...who knows what the hec is coming down the pipe...I do want to do some monumental sized landscape work, but there will be some figurative works and compositions as well...ciao for now...

Duplicity as a quality for an imaginary friend?

I have been working on the usual problem these days...keep the figure or leave it...The figure in painting is like my crack...the abstraction always leads me to it...and I fall for it every time...then the abstraction attempts to lead me away from it, and I battle with the imagery to keep it. Painting, for me, is a duplicitous little imaginary friend who gets excited by seeing me sweat out the canvas for a while (is that a good friend or bad?)!

London Flower Stand- oil on canvas 5x6ft April 2008...I needed to make the break from figurative work to re-explore the purity and complexity of paint itself and its power to create vision. Originally I began this thought process in 1995, but did not realize or act upon it until my last painting when I suddenly lost my 21 year link to figurative work.

We will see where this goes, and one thing is for sure...I will not return to the figure as I had before...This image is based upon my visit to London a couple of years ago. The fresh flower stands were powerful imagery.

This is an exciting work for me because of it's organic life span. This is a chalk pastel wash on primed canvas. There is no real bond between the chalk and gesso'd ground, so once the wash hits then surface all hell will break loose...After I applied a wash to the pastel the image exploded into a grand format of line, movement, color and complexities of drama. While it was still wet I photographed the image. Two days later most of the pastel had fallen off and it was as dry and grey as a 2000 year old mummy. The work is meant to exist only on camera and is only represented in public in the form of embellished one-of-a-kind prints (The original drawing was 6x6ft).

A LITTLE INFORMATION ABOUT ME

I am not sure if the average viewer, art enthusiast or even a great number of artists know the passion, the pleasure and pain it takes to truly be a painter. I am not saying that other artists don't possess the imagination, dedication or skill to create beautiful things, but there are few of us who truly live to experience the paint. Not all feel the pleasure of a brush gliding across the canvas and the excitement as that brush's mark on the canvas begins to end. A story was just told with that stroke, and thousands more are ready to be told at that very moment. Have they all experienced the beautiful accidents we call home on a long winter night spent freezing in the studio? Do they appreciate the beauty of that moment forgetting all other troubles? What about the smell of oil it as it permeates the air, or drips in gobs on your clothing and shoes in the heat of the moment? It is intoxicating. I live for the visual exchange of color and light and movement; for the explosion of passion that confounds reason for the sake of composition or message; for the blind fury of mark making on big canvases; to scream messages through imagery. It is beautiful. The end results are images fantastically broken and torn yet satisfied in their hyper-collaged existence by process and passion. Because of all this the process is more important to me than the end result… because the act of creation often trumps the imprint. That is where the value is found in my art.

Our process of memory dictates an infinite number of images compressed into seconds of internal vision, interpretive through emotion and complicated in reason, or relative madness, to our mind. Within each and every one of these synapse moments there exists an exquisite mixture of humor, sadness, excitement and exhaustion. An infinite surplus of these little noticed narratives awaits our recounting and people struggle with these recordings seeking to persevere and pleasure ourselves with such happenings in ways that I feel quantifies us as both mammal and human. I observe, interpret and discuss these possibilities through baser imagery, color, line, movement and composition. The imagery moves, strengthens and dissects as it is encompassed by the compound realities in each painting...in the end relying on strength of composition to petition for its distinct visual voice. These are images fantastically broken and torn yet satisfied in their hyper-collaged existence by languages of memory compromised by time.
